Guo Pei: First Chinese Designer to Present at French Couture Week

Guo Pei is the first and only Chinese couture designer to be loved around the world, and to present her work during French Couture Week. For the first time, because of her, the Chinese fashion industry finally welcomes the birth of Haute Couture.

“I love Haute Couture, because it is a kind of halt of life. Haute Couture isn’t like ready-to-wear, which prevails simply, and forgotten quickly. I hope my work will be showpieces in museum collections, be treasured as palace jewelry, and be recognized as a masterpiece that will be handed on from age to age. Real Haute Couture is eternal, long-tested, and, many years later, will be a kind of glancing back of time. By that time, Haute couture could have a representation of the lost glories and residual splendors, and give a reinterpretation of happiness I have had and niceness I have created.” GUO PEI

She has been dreaming about Haute Couture since her childhood. Her passion for traditional art and distinctive understanding of beauty made her stand out from the crowd. Her design always involves Chinese traditional embroidery, paintings, and local-produced fabrics which have existed in the world for thousands of years. Most of all, she is able to find a balance between tradition and contemporary. Using a modern way to tell a new story of ancient cultural treasures.

After ten years of hard work in the fashion industry, she was totally prepared and ready to give her full energy to Haute Couture design. Hence, in 1997, she established her own brand, the Rose Studio, which represents the best standard of Chinese couture.

With her love for Haute Couture, and endless creativity, between 2006 to 2012, Guo Pei brought her collections: “Saṃsāra”, “CHILDHOOD AND WONDERFUL DREAM FATE”, “THE ARABIAN 1002th NIGHT” and “THE LEGEND OF DRAGON” to the world. Each of her Haute Couture fashion show are full of initiations and surprises. Particularly, Guo Pei invited the world’s famous supermodel, Carmen dell’ Orefice, to present her works on the “THE ARABIAN 1002th NIGHT” catwalk which has been a hot topic that went viral.

In 2008, Guo Pei designed 3 collections of formal dresses for 2008 Beijing Olympics. She spent a whole year designing these dresses, and it took her workshop team 110,000 hours of production to finish the 3 collections. As a result, she won the best designed costumes for the 2008 Beijing Olympics medal award ceremony.

In 2013, because of her constantly contribution for couture in China, Guo Pei was honored by Asian Couture Federation (ACF) as founding member designer and Asian Couturier Extraordinaire Member, and become the only Chinese designer of Singapore FIDé.

In recent year, Guo Pei was invited by famous museums to present her creations on different exhibitions. Her “Porcelain” and “Dajin” collection were chosen to be featured at the New York Metropolitan Museum for exhibition “China: Through the Looking Glass”. Recently, Rihanna wore Guo Pei’s latest design on the red carpet of Met Gala. Once this hit the headline it brought Guo Pei into the spotlight.

Guo Pei’s design is highly appreciated by Chinese people who have high social status and wealth. She has built strong relationship with women who have prestige. Her loyal customers include Government officials, business elite, and celebrities. In 2015, she presented her “Through the Looking Glass” collection at First Ladies Annual Luncheon, which impressed all guests.

The same year, Guo Pei collaborated with well-known cosmetic brand MAC, blending her legendary elegance and playful MAC colors, to produce a new Haute Couture collection, “Garden of Soul.” This collection launched in New York at a hundred-year-old villa near Central Park.

By July 2015, she finally achieved her career goal: La Chambre Syndicale de la Haute Couture announced she will officially be presenting her collection at French Couture week.

Today, Guo Pei is settled in Paris to achieve her dream, perfect her skills, nurture her creativity, and share her cultural identity.
