GUCCI’S SUSTAINABLE FUTURE STRATEGY: “Natural Climate Solutions Portfolio”

Gucci’s sustainable future strategy, Gucci has further tiled the way for sustainability among high fashion brands. The Italian fashion house announced its “Natural Climate Solutions Portfolio,” a plan for the company to improve its impact on the environment. The new strategy can be defined in 3 categories; regenerative agriculture, reducing or offsetting emissions, and improving the materials the brand uses. All combined within Gucci help protect and restore critical forests and mangroves while also investing in regenerative agriculture within the brand’s supply chain.

With Alessandro Michele‘s arrival and subsequently in 2018, Gucci announced their plans to go carbon neutral with the Gucci Equilibrium platform’s launch. Since then, they’ve held carbon-neutral fashion shows. The first one was Spring / Summer 2020, left the fast-paced official fashion schedule to carve their path, launched a fully sustainable collection.
Also, Gucci partnership with The RealReal on a pre-loved Gucci digital shop. Between 2018 and 2019. They reduced their total GHG emissions by 18%. The Kering-owned label has marked a commitment to responsible business practices, and it’s all part of their ten-year plan.

Simultaneously prioritizing emission reductions, Gucci will compensate for residual emissions that cannot be avoided with REDD-plus investment -reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation -projects to protect the forests and wildlife within them. According to Gucci CEO Marco Bizzarri, ” We want to be part of the solution for nature and climate by mainstreaming practices and systems that will transform nature from being a victim of climate change, which will ultimately determine the future of our planet.

Overall, the announcement by Gucci further strengthens its position as an environmentally conscious Italian fashion house.
It’s encouraging to see a mega-brand like Gucci looking to improve its impact on biodiversity, together with reducing emissions.

Collectively, Alessandro Michele and CEO Marco Bizzarri set a promising precedent for luxury brands to look towards a total carbon-neutral benchmark.
