A fan’s memory: goodbye Kobe Bryant

Do you know what flashbulb memory is?

It is the theory that a person remembers perfectly what he or she was doing and where he or she was doing it at the exact moment when there was a traumatic event.

It is the reason why everyone who had the capacity in 2001 remembers exactly the situation they were in when they found out about the twin towers bombing.

I reluctantly verified the veracity of this theory last year, on January 26, 2020.

One year ago today, 9 p.m., while lying on the couch watching Juventus-Napoli (I swear I don’t remember anything about that game, not even the result) seven people died in a plane crash including Kobe “Bean” Bryant and his 14-year-old daughter Gianna.

What shocked us was not only that a dad had died at the age of 42 along with his daughter, it was not only the fact that Kobe was one of the greatest basketball players in history and one of the greatest sportsmen, what shocked us was the loss of our certainties.

We who love sports and live it viscerally believe that people like Kobe, LeBron, Jordan, Messi, Ronaldo and many others are not human, we “transhumanize” them, we elevate them to a higher level, we think they are indestructible, unbeatable, immortal heroes.

And the moment an immortal hero dies, the oxymoron crumbles the castle of certainties we had created, and we understand how life is an undiscounted, ephemeral and fragile commodity, just as ephemeral and fragile were our certainties on Jan. 26, 2020, 9 p.m. when we discovered that one of our idols had left us too soon.

Rest in peace Kobe, today more than ever we miss you.

“If you don’t believe in yourself, no one will do it for you.”

-Kobe Bryant.

The tragic helicopter crash that marked the death of Kobe Bryant and daughter Gigi: Jan. 26, 2020

Four years ago the world of sports and basketball was shaken by the news of Kobe Bryant’s death. The Lakers star lost his life in a helicopter crash, suddenly leaving a void for all basketball fans. It was Jan. 26, 2020, when Kobe Bryant died along with his daughter Gigi (13) and seven other people: he had departed in a helicopter from JohnWayne Airport in Orange County (Los Angeles) and was headed to Thousands Oaks, where a tournament organized by the NBA champion’s Mamba Sport Academy was scheduled.

Around 9:30 a.m., the aircraft reportedly made contact with the control tower, which was concerned because the craft had been flying in circles for a quarter of an hour. Then communication between controllers and pilot was lost due to the impact against Calabasas Hill in the North Los Angeles area. The conclusion reached by the expert report performed by the ‘National Transportation Safety Board,’ the U.S. transportation agency, is that the accident that led to the death of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi and seven other people was caused by pilot error.

Kobe Bryant’s extraordinary NBA career: the eight unforgettable moments of the Los Angeles Lakers star with a love for Italy three years after his death

To encapsulate Kobe Bryant’s long and exciting career in a few moments is certainly not easy: the Black Mamba has given all basketball fans plays that we certainly cannot forget. We at Mam-e.it have chosen five unforgettable moments from his career.

1. The 81 points vs. Toronto Raptors

On January 22, 2006 at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, Kobe Bryant put up one of the best offensive performances of all time. The Black Mamba recorded a career-high 81 points against the Toronto Raptors, while overall his teammates scored just 41, just above half.

2. Olympic gold medals and the 2008 Beijing final against Spain.

For Bryant, the satisfactions came not only in the NBA, but also with his national team. After winning the FIBA Americas Championship in 2007, Kobe was summoned to the 2008 Beijing Olympics, where he won the 1st gold of his career by putting up 20 points, 6 assists and 3 rebounds in the final played against Pau Gasol’s Spain. Another win also against Spain at the 2012 London Olympic Games with 17 points, 2 assists and 2 rebounds on the score sheet.

3. April 12, 2013: in the lunette with a ruptured Achilles tendon.

In the game against Golden State on April 12, 2013, Kobe fell badly and quickly realized it was a serious injury. Before he walked off the court, however, he shot the free throws he was due for the foul he suffered, scored both, and they were two important points that earned the 118-116 victory. It was one of the greatest demonstrations of what he always called “Mamba Mentality.”

4. Kobe Bryant overtakes Michael Jordan in the All-time NBA scorers ranking.

Another date to remember after Kobe Bryant’s death is definitely Dec. 14, 2014, when the Lakers star surpassed Michael Jordan in the All-time scorers list with his 26 points trimmed against the Minnesota Timberwolves. The day before his passing, Bryant was overtaken on the list by LeBron James.

5. The 60 points in the last game

Kobe Bryant closed out his NBA career on April 13, 2016, and he did so with a legendary last performance: his 60 points in 42 minutes against the Utah Jazz at Staples Center earned him the record for best career-ending offensive performance. #MambaOut

Conclusion: Four years ago today, Kobe Bryant lost his life in that tragic accident that ended the life of the Lakers champion who grew up in Italy.
