Fashion beyond borders

Fashion is moving beyond borders of the usual circuits. We have always heard of the infamous fashion weeks of New York, London, Milan, Paris and Tokyo (mainly for streetwear), and stayed in anticipation for them. The main stream brands didn’t move outside these circles too much. But we have seen a tilting shift recently.

FASHION BEYOND BORDERS OF THE USUAL CIRCUITS OF AMERICA AND EUROPE, IS STEPPING INTO NEW LANDS.

CHANEL GOES TO SENEGAL

Chanel unveiled their 2022-23 Métiers d’art collection from Dakar, Senegal. It’s a collection of long fitted coats, seventies collars, platform shoes, fitted flared pants, and oversized sweatshirts. Plant motifs are adorned on silhouettes, sequins and sparkling pendants add shimmer, and laces adds an elegant touch.

It was a result of numerous meetings held in Senegal over the past three years, with the aim of passing on the know-how of the Maison to the new generations. The purpose of this project is to draw on traditions, revisit forms of knowledge, promoting and encouraging “vocations” among students, families and craft lovers.

A sort of lasting creative dialogue between the fashion house and the various entrepreneurial initiatives carried out with Senegalese organizations and experts: for this Virginie Viard , creative director of Chanel since 2019, has chosen to show the Métiers d’Art collection in the former Palace of Justice, in Dakar, home of this accompanying artistic program.

DIOR PEAKS AT GIZA

Earlier this December, Dior chose to unveil their Men’s Pre-Fall collection, in presence of one of the wonders of the world. At the magnificent venue in front of the Pyramids of Giza, it was a star-studded event.

A fall collection that revealed itself in the scorched Giza desert at nightfall was textbook Kim Jones: vast, elegant, cinematic. The tombs of ancient pharaohs lit up, a snake of LEDs illuminating the runway into existence to the sound of pounding techno.

Male models walk in line across sand

The fashion show was the culmination of an unofficial celebration of its 75th year in business. A parade of 75 models, one for each year of the house’s life, trekked through the sand. Jones commented,

“With this anniversary and the collections’ we’ve done that are all entwined and building to a conclusion, it felt appropriate to do something very special at the end of the year. It is the summing up of past, present and future in a place—in front of the Great Pyramid.”

The ancient wonders illuminated against the night sky evoked a sense of otherworldliness as 75 models walked the LED-lit runway to thumping techno music. AFP

WHAT COMES NEXT?

Will soon other brands follow, and choose exotic locations to hold and tell different stories? With the metaverse fashion week coming up, will fashion become more virtual in crossing borders and not be so quite literal?
