Gucci‘s renovated store on Via Montenapoleone 5 in Milan is a tribute to both the city and Italian design and creativity. Although Sabato De Sarno, the new creative director, has not yet fully infused his vision into the flagship, it is evident that he has had a significant impact and that this marks a significant divergence from the store concept of Alessandro Michele.

Jean-François Palus, president and chief executive officer, stated:

“The store invites our clients to embark on a beautifully tailored experience, showcasing the exceptional quality of the house’s products. Here, Gucci’s fashion authority and timeless luxury are center stage. This flagship echoes Gucci’s profound appreciation for contemporary art and design and epitomizes the essence of Italian beauty and craftsmanship”.

Furthermore, the fact that the store was the first to open in Milan and was opened by Rodolfo Gucci, one of the three sons of founder Guccio Gucci, lends it further symbolic significance. It closed in July 2022 and reopened on December 7 after undergoing extensive renovations. An evening celebration will be held in honor of Gucci’s significant milestone.

High-end, affluent people are drawn to Via Montenapoleone, which also houses the flagship stores of major global luxury brands. Among the stores close to Gucci are the new Chanel flagship and Ferragamo, Fendi, Etro, Hermès, Dior, and Prada.

The floors of the flagship building on Via Montenapoleone are striking, with intricate geometric patterns made of marble from Cipollino and Bardiglio that evoke memories of some of the city’s most famous residential projects, such as Villa Necchi Campiglio. The use of the artisanal Venetian “pulegoso” glass, which is filled with tiny gas bubbles, on door handles and shelves is a symbol of Italian craftsmanship.

The Gucci’s renovated store honors the design of Italian furniture. Some of the pieces are the armchair “Utrecht” by Gerrit Thomas Rietveld that Cassina has; the sofa “Maralunga” for Cassina’s iMaestri Collection; the sofa “La Bambola” by Mario Bellini and the sofa system “Tufty-Time” by Patricia Urquiola for B&B Italia; the seat “Rod” by Piero Lissoni for Living Divani; and the table “Gladstone” by Rodolfo Dordoni for Minotti.

As an art collector, De Sarno’s enthusiasm for the arts is evident throughout the store, which is made distinctive by the modern and contemporary pieces chosen by curator Truls Blaasmo that are by both established and midcareer artists. In keeping with the city’s legacy, the boutique features pieces by international artists like Nathlie Provosty, Jaime Poblete, François Durel, Michael Rey, Herbert Hamak, Adji Dieye, and Augustas Serapinas, as well as works by Milanese masters like Lucio Fontana, Getulio Alviani, Liliana Moro, and Franco Mazzucchelli.

The ground floor features a room with lacquered walls and ceilings, carpeted in Rosso Ancora, which bears the signature of De Sarno. Rosso Ancora, the designer’s new deep, liquid red color that is almost burgundy and which he debuted with his spring 2024 collection. A glowing Gucci Ancora sign further telegraphs the message, while 150 maquettes of Jackie Notte bags in the same red hue hang on the wall like a modern piece of art.

The Gucci’s renovated store, which spans two floors and nearly 20,000 square feet, offers handbags, luggage, shoes, silks, eyewear, jewelry, fragrances, and gift items in addition to Gucci’s RTW collections for men and women. Two VIP lounges are also available. The ground floor entry features a display of leather goods that are arranged on a striking white alabaster wall that is backlit. The display features a selection of Jackie Notte bags and Signoria slingback pumps from the Ancora collection.

Gucci’s silk carrés, which feature the renowned Flora print that Vittorio Accornero created for Princess Grace of Monaco in 1966, are displayed as backlit paintings on an alternative wall. Preorders are accepted for De Sarno’s Ancora clothing line, which is on display and available on the lower floor. The boutique was designed with the help of LEED guidelines and principles, which monitor and promote energy efficiency. This is part of Gucci’s commitment to implementing and improving eco-friendly initiatives and energy-efficient technologies in the house’s stores worldwide.
