questa volta se la gioca tutta con The Revenant. Il film diretto da Alejandro González Iñárritu, è tratto dal romanzo omonimo del 2003 di Michael Punke, parzialmente ispirato alla vita del cacciatore Hugh Glass, è un racconto tetro sulla sulla sopravvivenza e sulla vendetta. In cima alla classifica delle candidature per dodidici statuette, seguito a ruota da Mad Max: Fury Road con dieci nomination.
Creed riporta in vetta Silvester Stallone come Miglior Attore non protagonista, mentre Tarantino resta a bocca asciutta con The Hateful Eight, candidato solo nella categoria per Miglior Colonna Sonora Originale.
