The Golden Globes 2024 have officially kicked off awards season. The biggest stars in Hollywood and beyond descended upon the Beverly Hilton on Sunday to celebrate the best in television and film with the 81st Golden Globe Awards. Behind the scenes, things appeared a little different from what was visible on the Golden Globes 2024 red carpet, where glamour returned for another year in the form of stunning gowns, sharp suits, and sparkling accessories.
Dick Clark Productions and Eldridge Industries assumed control of the ceremony following the dissolution of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association in June 2023. The ceremony will now air on CBS (with streaming available on Paramount+), and a larger voting body will determine the recipient of a statuette. The Golden Globes 2024 red carpet, however, will still be the venue for celebrities to formally launch their careers in style, regardless of all the changes that took place off screen.
Stars wearing striking red hues was one of the biggest trends of the evening, matching the carpet itself. Scarlet gowns were worn by Florence Pugh, Heidi Klum, Alma Pöysti, Rachel Brosnahan, Julianne Moore, and Ayo Edebiri, while Da’Vine Barry Keoghan, Joy Randolph, and John Krasinski chose to wear various tones of burgundy, maroon, and similar colors.
One more well-liked appearance on Sunday? Winter white. In a monochromatic look, Andrew Scott paired a white top with his snowy tux, while Riley Keough, Lily Gladstone, Elizabeth Olsen, Natasha Lyonne, and Elle Fanning chose different shades of milky white.
With nine nominations in various categories, Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s box office hit that became the highest-grossing movie of 2023, led the field. Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, received eight nominations, and Killers of the Flower Moon, helmed by Martin Scorsese, received seven. In the meantime, Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple), Jennifer Lawrence (No Hard Feelings), Natalie Portman (May December), Alma Pöysti (Fallen Leaves), Margot Robbie (Barbie), and Emma Stone (Poor Things) were all nominated for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture—Musical or Comedy. Stone won the prize.
On the small screen, The Bear and Only Murders in the Building each received five nominations, while Succession, which concluded its four-season run in May, received nine nominations for drama. But regardless of the winner, every guest had plenty of outfits fit for an award.
