Maison Margiela Couture Show 2024: Porcelain dolls

Renowned makeup artist Pat McGrath collaborated with Maison Margiela‘s creative director John Galliano to create the porcelain dolls looks that the models wore at the brand’s spring 2024 couture show.

Maison Margiela’s Show transformed the models as porcelain dolls

Ultra-luminous skin, pencil-thin eyebrows, and muted, cool-toned eyeshadows turned models into porcelain dolls for the highly theatrical collection, which aimed to cast a stylish light on the prostitutes and street sweepers who made up Paris’s underbelly in the 1930s. Models teetered down the runway as if under the control of puppet strings, adding to the doll-like drama of the looks. They then twisted their bodies into flamboyant poses in front of the photographers’ pit.

The narrative of Galliano, a reflection on the “ritual of dressing” as a “composition of the self,” was largely made possible by the presence of this makeup. The ensembles were dubbed “a study of the muse-like relationship between artists and their anatomical lay dolls” by the fashion house.

It was only natural that TikTok started trying to replicate the beauty looks at home, with many beauty enthusiasts speculating that the secret to the models’ flawless complexions might have been peelable liquid latex. Investigators wondered on Reddit if the secret to the look was Kryolan Liquid Glass, a synthetic product that gives the skin a similar sheen.

However, the show’s brilliant creator, makeup artist extraordinaire Pat McGrath, quickly refuted this theory. “We didn’t use Kryolan,” she stated in one Instagram commenter.

It appears that McGrath may be releasing the product under her own brand, Pat McGrath Labs. McGrath wrote alongside a video showing models removing their makeup for the show:

“Just back from Paris and wanted to thank you ALL for the love and support!! All will be REVEALED very soon.”

Let’s take a loot at the press release from the brand describing the remaining products used to create the ethereal looks, such as Pat McGrath Labs’ Skin Fetish: Sublime Perfection Concealer, Mothership I Subliminal Eyeshadow Palette, and the Skin Fetish Divine Blush.

The Pat McGrath Labs Divine Skin: Rose 001TM The Essence should be used to prepare the skin for a more natural version of the porcelain glass look, according to a statement from McGrath. “Then perfect using the Sublime Perfection Foundation,” she suggested. “For the ultimate glowing cheeks, apply and blend the Divine Blush: Legendary Glow Colour Balm for a flushed doll-like look.”

The obsession with McGrath’s originality is not limited to beauty experts. Celebrities, such as fellow beauty mogul Bobbi Brown, have showered her posts with praise; she wrote “Omg. You are the greatest living makeup artist of all time,” and Katy Perry, who commented, “My fav ever. Iconic. I’ve only ever used that word like twice. I think the first time was Beyoncé”.
