“Cristóbal Balenciaga” series launched in Disney+ 2024

Today, the Disney+ streaming platform launches a brand new series dedicated to Cristóbal Balenciaga. It’s an unprecedented journey into the origins of an exceptional fashion house and, with it, into the world of mid-twentieth-century couture.

“Cristóbal Balenciaga” series premieres today on Disney+

“Cristóbal Balenciaga” series is a six 52-minute episodes that cover a significant aspect of the designer’s life and career. This Spanish production, which debuted today exclusively on Disney+, was conceived by Lourdes Iglesias and helmed by Aitor Arregi, Jon Garaño, and Jose Mari Goenaga. It starts in 1937 with the Paris debut of the designer’s first Haute Couture collection. It was a challenge for the forty-two-year-old Cristóbal Balenciaga, who had to win over a new clientele and take over a Parisian society already dominated by several major fashion houses, having fled the Spanish Civil War.

This original creation offers a unique perspective on the House’s couture heritage, which is something the fashion house has been attempting to revive recently with guided tours of its historic salons and artificial intelligence-powered silhouettes from its archive. It also sheds more light on the designer’s personality and sense of style.

Here is the official synopsis of this highly anticipated global hit that has already received positive reviews:

“Cristóbal Balenciaga presented his first haute couture collection in Paris. Prior to that, his career had experienced great success in his ateliers in Madrid and San Sebastián, having dressed the Spanish elite and aristocracy. However, trend-setting designs in Spain did not work in the sophisticated fashion empire that became Paris, where Chanel, Dior and Givenchy dictated the trends. Driven by his obsession for control in all aspects of his life, Balenciaga would define his style and end up becoming one of the most important designers of all time.”

Starring in Balenciaga’s series alongside an international ensemble of performers, Alberto San Juan brings to life well-known figures from the 20th century. Belén Cuesta (Fabiola de Mora y Aragón); Josean Bengoetxea (Nicolás Bizkarrondo, the businessman from San Sebastian); Cecilia Solaguren (his wife, Virgilia Mendizabal); Adam Quintero (Ramón Esparza, the designer’s partner and collaborator); Thomas Coumans (Wladzio D’Attainville, Cristóbal Balenciaga’s partner and business partner); Gemma Whelan (Prudence Glynn, journalist for The Times); Gabrielle Lazure (Carmel Snow, Harper’s Bazaar’s fashion director); Patrice Thibaud (Christian Dior); Nine d’Urso (model Colette); and Anna-Victoire Olivier (actress Audrey Hepburn).

The technical team behind is composed of exceptional experts. The original soundtrack was composed, among other things, by Alberto Iglesias, a composer who has won 11 Goya Awards, been nominated 19 times, and been nominated for four Academy Awards, three Bafta Awards, and two Golden Globes; Along with her partner Pepo Ruiz Dorado, Bina Daigeler, an Academy Award nominee for The Walt Disney Studios’ live-action film “Mulan” and an Emmy Award nominee for “Mrs. America’s costume design,” is the costume designer for “Cristóbal Balenciaga.”

Javier Agirre Erauso, a winner of the Goya Award for “The Giant,” is the director of photography, and Mikel Serrano, a winner of the Goya Awards for “The Giant” and “Akelarre,” is the art director; Karmele Soler (Goya Award winner for “The Skin I live in”) is the makeup artist.
